The international recognition of the Day of Vesak marked a significant milestone in 2000 when it was formally adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Following this historic recognition, sixteen Buddhist-majority countries took turns hosting the Day of Vesak celebrations at the United Nations. Thailand assumed the role of host in 2004 (B.E. 2547), signifying its important position in the global Buddhist community.

The Thai government and the Supreme Sangha Council appointed Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University as the principal organizer of the event and designated Phra Sasanasophon (now Somdet Phra Ariyavangsagatayana, the 20th Supreme Patriarch of Thailand) as the head of the Thai monastic delegation to celebrate Vesak Day at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on June 1, 2004.

The event was further distinguished by the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati. During this auspicious occasion, Phra Thepsophon (currently Phra Brahmapundit), then rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, delivered a Dhamma talk, commemorating the Day of Vesak.
